Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered many other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the substance was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for details.
A high-ranking representative commented the attack rendered him stunned and required to be solved promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
