The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.
This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His son, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that the former president be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.
The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The judges found that the rioters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
