Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
